A Lot, Allot, Alot?

Confusing English mistakes my students make!

Let's clear up how to use these correctly...

  • Alot is not a word. It should never be used!

  • Allot is a verb which means to divide or distribute by share or portion; distribute or parcel out

For example:

Equal time was allotted to each student for their exams.

Synonyms: allocate, assign, issue

  • A lot means 'a large number / amount'.

It is used in informal writing and speaking for both count and non-count nouns.

For example:

Elon Musk has a lot of money.

My neighbours have invited a lot of friends to their dinner party.

XOXO,

Jenny Mae
