IELTS Speaking: Tips

Updated: May 2

Here are some of my tips!

IELTS Speaking Exam Tips:

When practicing part 2, record yourself speaking for two minutes and listen back to catch your own mistakes. Expand your answers! Use the bullet points as a guide. Tell a story and elaborate.

Be natural and confident when speaking with the examiner.

Focus on expanding your answer rather than sounding like an expert on the subject. The examiner doesn’t care how smart you are. They care how well you can express yourself in English.

If you can, use idiomatic language, collocations, phrasal verbs and slang! Remember, this is an informal speaking examination.

Use lots of synonyms and rephrase the questions in your responses.

Get into the habit of always answering “WHY” before the examiner has to ask you!

Don’t take it personally if the examiner isn’t looking at you or smiling. Don’t allow their behaviour to impact your confidence.

You will NOT lose marks for asking the examiner to repeat the question or to clarify a word.

You can lie! This is not an intelligence test. Show off your speaking skills!

Have fun and good luck,

Jenny Mae
