Why Learn Collocations?

Collocations are an important part of English language acquisition. Here's why...

What is a Collocation?

A collocation is a pair or group of words that are used together in conversation and writing.

They are natural to native speakers, but English learners need to make an effort to learn them.

In the above sentence, "make an effort" is a collocation!

We don't say "do an effort", or "have an effort", do we?

We always say, "make an effort". That is a collocation!

3 Reasons to Learn Collocations:

  1. to be more expressive and accurate in your speaking

For example:

Instead of saying very cold, you can say bitterly cold!

Instead of saying very successful, you should say highly successful!

2. to sound more natural in daily speaking

As mentioned above, native speakers learn collocations from childhood, and therefore know what sounds right or wrong. English language learners need to not only learn collocations, but also understand when we use them!

When you use collocations, it makes it easier for native English speakers to understand you.

3. improve your academic writing

Collocations will add depth to your writing while making it easier to read.

Some collocations are informal, while others are formal.

Studying collocations is highly recommended if you want to improve your English.

Have fun!
